Dharamshala is also pronounced as Dharamsala and is the district headquarter of Kangra. It is situated in a panoramic location in the lap of Dhauladhar mountain range. As per the history the British discovered this place as a small hamlet. After occupying the Kangra fort and annexing the Kangra valley in 1846, they wanted to establish their army base somewhere at a high place. At that time Sir Alexander Cunningham selected the place near Mcleodganj. That place suited the British with their nice cool climate. When they came here they have seen one building which was called Dharamshilla. So after the name of that building they have given the name to that whole place Dharamshala. So that’s why Dharamshala came in to existence.
Presently Dharamshala is divided in two parts Upper Dharamshala & Lower Dharamshala.
Upper Dharamshala is also called as Mcleodganj. Mcleodganj got its name after the Lieutenant governor of Punjab at that time. Before the partition Dharamshala used to be the part of Punjab. His name was David Mcleod. Presently Mcleodganj is the home in exile for His Holiness 14th Dalai Lama.
Important points to visit are: Dalai Lama Temple & Museum, Bhagsu Nag temple & waterfall, Library of Tibetan Works & Archives, Tibetan Medicine and Astrological Center, Dharamkot and Naddi villages. Mcleodganj is also the origin point for many walks and treks.
Lower Dharamshala is the main commercial centre for local people. All the government offices/buildings of different departments and main hospital and health center are located in lower Dharamshala. In the year 2016 Dharamshala came under one of the smart cities of India and also upgraded from Municipal council to Municipal corporation.
